Gaeta 
… a city steeped in history, right down to its name. In his Aeneid, Virgil tells how the hero Aeneas buried his nurse Caieta here, a story later echoed by Dante in the Divine Comedy, when Ulysses says that: “he passed before Aeneas gave her that name“. Gaeta has a very complex history, dating back to the 8th century BC. Four centuries later, the Romans arrived and turned it, together with nearby Formia, into a residence for important figures.
How to get to Gaeta?
Gaeta is a renowned seaside resort and tourist destination in southern Lazio, 130 km from Rome and just 90 km from Naples, and is located in the heart of the Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park.
The nearest railway station is undoubtedly Formia (Formia-Gaeta FS station), which can be reached from the railway stations in Naples or Rome.
From Formia to Gaeta, you can also rely on a number of buses running approximately every 30 minutes in both directions, making it easy even for those without a car to get around without too much hassle.
Another perfectly valid option is to drive, although it is not recommended during the summer months, when Italians traditionally take their holidays and traffic can become particularly heavy on the way to seaside resorts.
Gaeta is also easy to reach by sea, and its natural inlet is home to some of the best-equipped marinas in the Lazio region.
Getting around the city
Another important point to consider is transportation within the city. Gaeta is a fairly small municipality, so there is no real difficulty in getting around on foot and exploring every corner of this beautiful place.
In most cases, tourists stay in hotels or holiday homes close to the beach, so getting around is not particularly complicated.
However, if you would rather not walk too far, you can also use the convenient bus network, which will take you more or less wherever you need to go.
