But the real <strong>&#8220;St Patrick&#8217;s Well&#8221;<\/strong> is a historic structure built by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in the splendid city of <strong>Orvieto<\/strong><b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/7mzMgdgybwp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/b>, back in the 16th century.<\/p>\n<p>Step after step, walking down the two helicoidal ramps, one seems to descend, as if taken by a vortex, into the heart of the earth and re-emerge, with some difficulty for the less trained, from those same bowels. In a sensation that mixes magic and curiosity, walking those fifty-four metres deep, thirteen metres in diameter, carved into the tuff, really does give the impression of descending into another dimension, with the constant temptation, to which visitors easily succumb, to count the steps. Two hundred and forty-eight steps, lit by seventy large windows and it is immediately a sacred atmosphere, immersed as one is in a deep cavity, decidedly not suitable for the claustrophobic.<\/p>\n<p>But those who have been there want to return, and this is demonstrated by the custom in recent years of throwing a coin at the bottom in the hope of visiting it again.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2250\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/orvieto-pozzo-della-cava-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pozzo della Cava<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another well-known well is the one known as &#8216;<strong>della Cava<\/strong>&#8216;<b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ETyHmMCQmCN2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/b>. Only thirty-eight metres deep, so to speak, it is located in a hypogeum complex of nine interconnected rooms that provide the city with fascinating sights. On the ground floor, one can find a <strong>&#8216;kiln&#8217;<\/strong> with fragments of majolica tiles thrown in because they were defective; there are medieval wells used for throwing bones and waste, known as <strong>&#8216;butti&#8217;<\/strong>; an <strong>&#8216;Etruscan tomb&#8217;<\/strong> transformed into a <strong>&#8216;follone&#8217;<\/strong>, a contraption for working textiles. There is also an <strong>&#8220;Etruscan cistern&#8221;<\/strong>, a<strong> &#8220;cellar&#8221;<\/strong> for storing the <strong>&#8220;wine of popes and kings&#8221;<\/strong>, as Orvieto&#8217;s wine was known in the Middle Ages, the &#8220;Pillar of the Tower&#8221; in the<strong> &#8220;Muffola Room&#8221;<\/strong> and many tunnels.<\/p>\n<p>An antiquity palpable centimetre after centimetre, sigh after sigh, that coexists perfectly with contemporary trends, such as, for example, the traditional nativity scene set up each year from Christmas Eve until the Sunday after Epiphany, set up in the very last room of the Pozzo della Cava.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2251\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/orvieto-Pug-Girl-flickr10626835325_4c1ab6f97c_z-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chiesa di Santi Andrea e Bartolomeo-\u00a9Pug Girl\/flickr.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In short, it is a world to be discovered with passion, the one immersed in the soil of the Umbrian city that makes of its subsoil a profound wealth and feather in its cap, as is also the case of the <strong>&#8220;Church of Saints Andrew and Bartholomew &#8220;<\/strong><b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Tsihjn62sVR2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/b>, which also embodies an important reference point for city life, located in Piazza della Repubblica in the historic centre. <strong>The archaeological excavations, which can be accessed on guided tours, preserve ancient mosaic floors from the early Christian basilica, wells and even some tombs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/en\/orvieto\/2\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2252\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2252\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Necropoli_crocifisso_del_tufo-orvieto-By-Paperoastro-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Necropoli crocifisso del tufo-\u00a9Paperoastro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Orvieto is when you say look what&#8217;s underneath! The census inaugurated in the seventies by some of Orvieto&#8217;s speleologists led to the rediscovery and counting of more than 1,200 artificial cavities, which were given the name &#8220;Hadrian&#8217;s Labyrinth &#8220;<b><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/K4yqHZGMaUq\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/b>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if we are not &#8220;under&#8221; Orvieto&#8221;, we are nevertheless &#8220;beyond&#8221;, being able to visit one of the most beautiful extruscan necropolises in existence: <strong>&#8220;The Necropolis of the Crucifix of the Tufa &#8220;<\/strong><b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Xamm7Ts5aAS2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/b>. It is located at the base of Orvieto&#8217;s cliff, accessed by a pedestrian walkway that surrounds it, and is in fact a cluster of small quadrangular aedicule tombs, all more or less the same size, for a total of about seventy, made of tufa bricks, with a &#8220;chamber&#8221; model.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2238\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2238\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/duomo-orvieto-mdm1979mdm-pixabay-1368754_640-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta-\u00a9mdm1979mdm\/pixabay.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, if you decide to climb up from the depths there are also many churches, palaces and museums, such as the breathtaking fa\u00e7ade of <strong>Orvieto&#8217;s Duomo, the Cathedral of &#8220;Santa Maria Assunta &#8220;<\/strong><b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/vGRyj8bzB5r\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/b>. Stunning mosaics and bas-reliefs decorate the main wall of the entrance, while four bronze stuatues embellish the cornices of the pillars flanking the portals, all embellished by the rose window and wonderful alternating basalt and travertine interior walls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2239\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2239\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/orvieto-Tama66-pixaby-1684692_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta-\u00a9Tama66-pixabay.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Besides this, walking along Orvieto&#8217;s streets also responds to excellent culinary reasons: <strong>&#8216;Palomba alla leccarda&#8217; and &#8216;Pollo alla cacciatora&#8217;<\/strong> are among the city&#8217;s oldest and most typical dishes, including <strong>&#8216;Umbrichelli al tartufo&#8217; (Umbrichelli with truffles)<\/strong> and <strong>&#8216;Lumachelle&#8217;<\/strong>, pasta made from a careful mixture of flour, water and cheese. As for the confectionery menu,<strong> &#8216;Tozzetti alle mandorle&#8217;<\/strong>, <strong>&#8216;Frittelle di San Giuseppe&#8217;<\/strong>, <strong>&#8216;ciambelle al vino e all&#8217;anice&#8217; (wine and aniseed doughnuts) and &#8216;Pizze pasquali&#8217; (Easter pizzas)<\/strong> are the stars. King of the table, however, remains<strong> &#8216;Orvieto D.O.C.&#8217;<\/strong>, one of the most representative wines of the Italian wine panorama.<\/p>\n<p>Folklore enthusiasts should note the &#8216;Festa della Palombella&#8217; held every year on<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2253\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/orvieto-comics-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9orvietocomics.it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pentecost, as well as the &#8216;Palio dell&#8217;Oca&#8217;.
