With a good dose of imagination, it will seem easy to most to imagine her leaning out of that balcony as her young suitor the Montague lusts after her from below, just as Shakespeare immortalised them in one of the world’s most popular tragedies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Precisely in order to avoid the same fate of the two blossoming and ill-fated lovers, many caress the right breast of the statue displayed in the inner atrium of the house-museum\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a>, depicting the very young Juliet.<\/strong> A custom that meant that in 2014 the original statue, placed there in 1972 and created by sculptor Nereo Costantini in 1969, was replaced by a copy, as it had been worn down by decades of visitor contact. On the new sculpture, however, the small hole left open right on the breast is a reminder of the ‘traditional good-luck gesture’ celebrated by lovers all over the world.<\/p>\n

Another custom, perhaps a less pleasant one and one that has been opposed over time, was that of leaving tearful prayers or simple signatures on the walls surrounding the theatre of this ‘love procession’.<\/strong> A pilgrimage that touches on many other destinations, such as the ‘fortified’ house of Romeo<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b><\/strong>, next to the Arche Scaligere\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b>, or the red marble sarcophagus in the former convent of San Francesco al Corso<\/strong>, home of the ‘G.B. Cavalcaselle’ \"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a>fresco museumMaps-icon-small and believed to be Juliet’s tomb.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the ‘Urbs Marmorea’, in the ‘City of Marble’<\/strong> as it was called in the Middle Ages, given the extensive use of stone in street furniture, although ‘Romeo and Juliet’ consecrates it to worldwide attention, it certainly does not lack other strengths.<\/p>\n

The ‘Arena’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b>, for example, the Roman amphitheatre in the heart of the city’s historic centre, is one of the best-preserved and best-known Roman amphitheatre architectures.<\/strong><\/p>\n

degree of preservation and best known in the world along with the Colosseum in Rome (Lazio)<\/strong> and the amphitheatre in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta – Campania)<\/strong>. The fascinating venue, one hundred and ten metres wide and one hundred and forty metres long, with a sequesnza formed by seventy-two double stone arches, is the proscenium of many international events: from the ‘Festival lirico areniano’<\/strong>, held every summer since 1913, to the finals of the popular ‘Festivalbar’<\/strong>, as well as a final of the ‘Giochi senza frontiere’<\/strong> (games without frontiers) and the final stages of two editions of the ‘Giro d’Italia’<\/strong>. The amphitheatre also hosts important concerts of national and international pop music.<\/p>\n

And on the pilgrimage between ‘literary’ love and the Arena, you will wonder if there is a taste route. Delicacies are not lacking throughout the menu. Among the first<\/p>\n

dishes certainly stand out: ‘Bigoli con le sardelle’, ‘Gnocchi di patate e sedano rapa di Verona’ (potato and celeriac dumplings) or ‘zucchero e cannella’ (sugar and cinnamon)<\/strong>, and ‘Minestra di creste di gallo’ (cockscomb soup)<\/strong>, many recipes with polenta<\/strong>, with ‘rico’ and soups of many types, such as ‘Gardesana’ or ‘Russole’<\/strong>. Plus second courses of fish, meat and game, such as ‘Pike in sauce’<\/strong>, ‘Braised in Amarone’<\/strong>, ‘Quails alla scaligera’ or ‘Fried frogs’<\/strong>. Then there is the great panorama of desserts: from ‘Brassadela veronese’<\/strong>, a sort of doughnut characterised by the use of grappa, to ‘Bole’ with chestnut flour, or ‘Cotognata’<\/strong>, ‘Pot\u00f2na’ and ‘Rufioi’ there is just the tapestry of choice.<\/p>\n

Finally, how could one not stroll a little in Verona’s oldest square, ‘Piazza delle Erbe’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b>, or in the largest, also in the historic centre, ‘Piazza Bra’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b> (from the Lombard ‘Breit’, meaning ‘wide’). And then there is always the Adige, which allows you to stroll along its banks and banks, and, crossing its beautiful bridges, allows you to land on the left bank, where the so-called ‘other Verona’, or ‘Veronetta’ (from ‘Veronette’, as it was renamed by Napoleon!), rich in treasures and evocative scenery, opens up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting from ‘Ponte Pietra’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b> you find yourself in front of the ‘Scalone di San Pietro’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b> and the Austrian barracks ‘Castel San Pietro’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b>; then there is the church of ‘San Giovanni in Valle’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b>; going down via ‘Santa Maria in Organo’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/b> you reach the church of the same name, which according to Vasari<\/strong> was ‘the most beautiful in Italy’<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And again the ‘Giardiano Giusti’\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong> one of the most beautiful examples of an Italian Renaissance garden, a sort of paradise of greenery and, behind the ‘Duomo’, the ‘Palazzo del Vescovado’, where it is said that Giovanni Della Casa started to write the manual of good manners, the ‘Galateo’.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Verona was the birthplace of many important names in culture, such as Emilio Salgari,<\/strong> Sandokan’s father, with his first success ‘The Tiger of Malyasia’<\/strong>, published in 1883, in the Veronese newspaper ‘La Nuova Arena’<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Lastly, to wink at folklore and fun, we must not forget the ‘Veronese Carnival’ of ‘Venerd\u00ec Gnocolar’<\/strong>: a tasty challenge to elect the ‘Pap\u00e0 del Gnocco’ (Dad of the Dumpling)!<\/strong><\/p>\n
