Access to the structure is free and can be visited independently.<\/strong><br \/>\nVery characteristic is the view that can be admired from the square in front of the Basilica that allows one to observe the Perugia valley.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6232\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6232\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cattedrale-Rufino-assisi-hdr-01-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cattedrale Rufino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Cathedral of San Rufino<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The main ecclesiastical site in Assisi, contrary to popular belief, is not the Basilica of St Francis but the Cathedral of San Rufino<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/CEmH1i6CN3hJqMQa6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe cathedral built in the 12th century was dedicated to Saint Rufinus, a 3rd century bishop and martyr, and is the oldest in Assisi. The cathedral stands where the ancient Roman Forum was and in the same place where there was a temple dedicated to the Bona Mater.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is believed that St Clare and St Francis were baptised here<\/strong>, and the Saint also preached his first sermon here. The fa\u00e7ade is the finest example of Gothic-Umbrian style, with three rose windows and three portals, the lunette also houses Christ Enthroned between the sun and the moon, the Madonna breastfeeding on the left and St Rufinus on the right. The first is the Porziuncola, <strong>a small church within the cathedral complex. Its name is reminiscent of its shape, as it means &#8217;round&#8217;, and it was prepared during the autumn and winter months due to the ingredients used.
