\"45280586\"<\/a>Itri is the commune of traditions\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong>, a town where every month there is at least one event worth visiting for: the fires of St Joseph on 19 March, the so-called Infiorata<\/strong><\/a> on the occasion of Corpus Domini on 2 June, the festa della Madonna della Civita on 21 July<\/strong>, and a myriad of minor events celebrating popular folklore. Itri, a hilly town of almost 11,000 inhabitants located in the south of Pontino (LT), is best known for its enchanting castle\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong>, symbol of the town and witness to its wealth in the medieval period<\/strong>. Every corner of the mammoth structure contains a legend or evidence of a bloody clash such as the one involving the Brigands<\/strong>, whose exploits are now narrated and preserved in the town’s most important museum<\/a>. The brigandage museum<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong> in fact houses historical artefacts and memorabilia from the time of the brigands<\/strong>. Itri, whose name is still somewhat of a mystery (perhaps linked to the Latin word ‘Iter’ meaning ‘journey’), is in fact also known as the town of brigands and of Fr\u00e0 Diavolo<\/strong>, a genuine folk hero according to certain memoirs who led the anti-French Sanfedist revolt.<\/p>\n

\"Santuario<\/a>Festivities<\/strong> – Another symbol of the town is the Sanctuary of the Civita<\/strong><\/a> \"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong>, home of the town’s patron saint, located on the summit of Mount Fusco and destination of intense religious tourism from neighbouring municipalities and other towns in the region. To celebrate the Madonna in Itri<\/strong>, three days of festivities are held every year, from 20 to 22 July, attracting thousands of people. The feast of the Civita, in fact, is not only a recurrence for the Itrians but also for all the surrounding towns and villages, which have always been devoted to the Madonna and come en masse on the day of the feast to participate in the sacred procession. 21 July is also an opportunity for emigrants to return to their country of origin and for young people to dance the night away because, every year, a major concert with a big name in Italian music is organised.<\/p>\n

Finally, a particularly eagerly awaited moment is 19 March when, on the occasion of the fires of St Joseph<\/strong>, huge pyres are lit in every district and typical specialities such as zeppole (tasty fried pastries) are tasted. It is a very old tradition that sees each district of the city committed to building a bonfire, as tall and substantial as possible, so that the fire can unleash its full force and symbolically win the race with the other districts.<\/p>\n

\"abuso<\/a>Sea and nature<\/strong> – Few people know it, but the so-called ‘Spiaggia delle bambole’<\/strong> (Beach of the Dolls)\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong>, the most striking beach on the Riviera D’Ulisse<\/strong>, falls within the municipality of Itri. This small pebbly spot, situated between rocks and hills, is in fact considered one of the most precious in the area, so much so that it has been included in the list of Natura 2000 sites, the European network of areas for the conservation of biological diversity. The site with its crystal-clear water is in fact a favourite destination for those exploring the Riviera by boat. The fact that Itri is exactly halfway between the two most famous seaside resorts in the province makes it a particularly attractive destination for tourists who choose it, not only for the sea, but also for the possibility of doing sports (especially mountain biking and trekking)<\/strong>. As far as nature is concerned, the Aurunca town offers inestimable riches: immersed in the Monti Aurunci Natural Park, it is a true oasis of peace. Amidst centuries-old trees and wide stretches of Mediterranean scrub, it is not uncommon to find important historical and archaeological finds such as the ancient route of the Via Appia or the ruins of the ancient village of Campello, in the Campello Vecchio valley.<\/p>\n

\"percorso-blu-01\"<\/a>The Woodpark<\/strong> – In the heart of the protected area, the\u201cWoodpark\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong>, an attraction for young and old that is unparalleled in the surrounding area, was also recently created<\/strong>. In a dense and mysterious forest, ten courses of increasing difficulty have been set up, suspended among the trees and with more or less difficult obstacles to overcome. An adventure park where nature, in its various forms, can be discovered through games and activities that arouse the interest and curiosity of adults and children alike. In fact, \"marrone-evidenza1\"<\/a>there are simple courses, for the youngest or least experienced, and courses laid out by real professionals on which to test one’s skill, strength and cunning. For the lazy ones, there are also the so-called pulleys on which to jump from one tree to another in a leap of dozens and dozens of metres. All of this is done with the utmost safety thanks to the intelligent carabiners that only open if one of the two is firmly attached to the steel rope. brown-evidence1 At the end of the route, the park also has a picnic area, a relaxation zone and a site for orienteering, the so-called sport of the woods.<\/p>\n

The challenge is to move through unknown terrain using only a compass and a topographical map, in the shortest possible time and without missing any checkpoints (it is not the fastest who wins, but the one who can read the map correctly). Admission to the Woodpark 20 euro; 25 for park entry, orienteering and use of the picnic area.<\/p>\n

\"\"Typical foods<\/strong> – In addition to St. Joseph’s zeppole<\/strong>, sausages, olives and olive oil (famous throughout the world)<\/strong>, also characteristic of the town are ‘cacio marzolino’<\/strong>, a cheese made from the March milk of sheep and goats and assembled in typical small moulds, and ‘cicerchia’<\/strong>, similar to a bean in shape with a particular flavour somewhere between beans and chickpeas. These unique pulses, accompanied by wild chicory and local broccoletto<\/strong> and dressed with the highly prized oil, represent one of the tastiest and most sought-after typical dishes of the area.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
