If there were high water, it would probably be adventurous, but it would certainly still be a beauty with a noble profile, rain or shine: the ‘Serenissima’<\/strong>, the ‘Dominant’<\/strong>, the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’<\/strong>, we are in the presence of Venice<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/b>, one of the most beautiful cities in the world and considered, together with its lagoon, among the Italian ‘world heritage’ sites by Unesco<\/strong>. Goethe had already seen this coming in the 19th century in ‘Italian Journey’: ‘All that surrounds me is full of nobility, it is the grandiose and venerable work of human forces united, it is a monument not of a single prince, but of an entire people’.<\/p>\n

The most famous place is ‘St. Mark’s Square’<\/strong> \"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/b>, the only one for which the definition of ‘campi’ or ‘campielli’ is not used, at the centre of which is the ‘St. Mark’s Basilica’<\/strong>, coloured in gold and covered with mosaics telling the history of the city, with several bas-reliefs depicting the months of the year. Joined by the ‘Porta della Carta’<\/strong>, a work by Bartolomeo Bono, next to the Basilica is the ‘Palazzo Ducale’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/b>, currently used as a museum, with works by the best Venetian artists, it also houses the ‘Biblioteca Sansoviniana’<\/strong>.
\n\"\"Right in front of the Doge’s Palace, the ‘Campanile di San Marco’ is part of the not-to-be-missed ‘Flight of the Angel’ event that takes place during the world-famous ‘Carnival of Venice’<\/strong>. The origins of this celebration are very old: the first testimony dates back to a document by Doge Falier, dated 1904, in which the word ‘Carnival’ is mentioned for the first time. Towards the middle of the 16th century, an extraordinary event caused quite a stir: a young Turkish acrobat managed to walk on a very long run that started from a boat anchored in the Piazzetta way, reaching the balcony of the Doge’s Palace, paying his respects to the Doge. Such was the success that the ‘Svolo del turco’<\/strong> was born, scheduled every Shrove Thursday as a real celebration. Over the years it has obviously undergone many transformations, becoming the \"\"‘Flight of the Columbine’ in the 18th century. The masks from the Commedia dell’Arte play the leading role and remain one of the most popular gadgets among visitors who can buy them among the characteristic shops.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venice is not just the Carnival. You cannot fail to visit the ‘Sala del Maggior Consiglio<\/strong>‘, for centuries the great seat of government in the world, not to mention the sigh that anyone passing on the famous ‘Bridge of Sighs’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/b> ends up heaving, before or after being immortalised. Although Venice is a romantic city, it is not a sigh of love that we are talking about. The bridge, which spans the Rio di Palazzo, connects the Doge’s Palace to the Prigioni Nuove, and was used to take inmates from the prisons to the offices of the State Inquisitors to be judged.<\/p>\n

Its name derives precisely from this: from the last sigh that prisoners exhaled as they thought they would see the outside world for the last time. The bridge perhaps as famous as the sigh bridge, but certainly in the past more ‘pleasant’ to cross, is the Rialto\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/strong>, an imposing old bridge over the ‘Grand Canal’<\/strong>\"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a>, whose construction was at the centre of an architectural stylistic debate for a good eighty years. Nearby is the Rialto \"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/span>, the Venetian market par excellence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gondole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

An outside world that in a city like Venice can also be travelled by the very special ‘Gondole’<\/strong> that cross the waters of the canals, in particular the Grand Canal. Confirming the city’s status as one of the most popular destinations for lovers are the gondola serenades, which traditionally take place in the summer season. A small procession of a dozen or so gondolas carrying a singer usually accompanied by an accordion. Melodies in ancient and contemporary Venetian dialect are performed.<\/p>\n

Finally, for film buffs, one cannot forget that the Lagoon is the setting for the ‘Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica’, one of the oldest film festivals in the world, which has awarded the ‘Golden Lion’<\/strong> every late summer on the Venice Lido since 1932. This exhibition is part of the broader ‘Venice Biennale’<\/strong>, which includes the famous ‘International Exhibition of Contemporary Art’<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And for those who love typical cuisine, we recommend: risotto prepared with ‘ghiozzo’ (typical lagoon fish), ‘mol\u00e9che’, or small green crabs that are caught in the soft stage to be fried, and fried sardines, ‘risi e bisi’ (rice and peas), small Venetian prawns and the popular Venetian liver.<\/p>\n

Desserts include ‘Fritole’, ‘Bacioli’, ‘Xaeti’, ‘Pinsa’, ‘Galani’, ‘Fugassa’ and ‘Spuncioti de caramel’: dried fruit with a few grapes on wooden skewers, dipped in caramelised sugar. You can’t go to Venice and not make a detour to Harry’s Bar<\/strong> \"Maps-icon-small\"<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/strong>, the historic public venue, declared a national heritage site by the Ministry of Culture in 2001, famous for having created two world icons of food and beverage, we are talking about Carpaccio and the more famous Bellini.<\/p>\n

In short, it is clear that Venice is beautiful to ‘see’, to visit in a ‘gondola’, and to ‘live’ in its many characteristic events. To mention just a few more, there is the ‘Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics’, a historical commemoration held every four years between the end of May and the beginning of July; the ‘Historical Regatta’, which, between sport and folklore, is held every year on the first Sunday in September. Religious festivities include the ‘Festa della Madonna della Salute’, the ‘Festa della Sensa’, the ‘Festa del Redentore’ and that of ‘San Marco’, every 25 April. And then there is the ‘International Boat Show’ in spring, and the non-competitive ‘Su e zo per i ponti’ (Up and Down the Bridges) march through the calli and bridges of the city centre.<\/p>\n
