With its canals, narrow alleyways and elegant squares overlooking the lagoon, Venice<\/a> continues to attract millions of visitors, but the growing pressure of tourism has prompted the city authorities to consider new measures to better manage visitor flows.<\/p>\n

After three years of testing, the Venice Access Fee could become a permanent measure from 2027<\/strong>, with new rates and a possible extension of the days on which it applies.<\/p>\n

The most significant proposal would see the fee rise to as much as \u20ac30 on the busiest days<\/strong>, compared with the current rates of \u20ac5 and \u20ac10. However, this remains a proposal under consideration and is not yet a final tariff.<\/p>\n

According to statements by Michele Zuin, Venice’s Councillor for the Budget<\/strong>, the main aim would be to address day-trip tourism<\/strong>, particularly on the busiest days, rather than simply increase revenue.<\/p>\n

Possible extension of the application period<\/h3>\n

The city is also considering extending the period during which the fee applies. At present, it is mainly concentrated between April and July, while the possibility of adding selected days in March and September<\/strong> is also being examined. Any new rules will have to take into account their impact on tourism and accommodation businesses, as well as the necessary discussions with the Italian Government and Parliament to amend the current regulatory framework.<\/p>\n

Who is exempt from the fee?<\/h3>\n

Several categories are exempt, including residents and people born in the Municipality of Venice, children under 14, people holding a European Disability Card<\/strong>, and certain members of the Armed Forces and law-enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

Other categories must register and obtain a free exemption voucher. These include workers and commuters, students, non-resident property owners, people visiting resident family members and tourists staying in accommodation within the municipal area<\/strong>, who already pay the local tourist tax.<\/p>\n

The figures from the trial period<\/h3>\n

In 2025<\/strong>, the fee was applied on 54 days, with more than 720,000 paid vouchers issued and revenue of around \u20ac5.4 million. In 2026<\/strong>, according to the figures cited in the source material, the number of applicable days increased to 60, with 679,553 paid vouchers issued and approximately \u20ac5.2 million in revenue.<\/p>\n

The city will now assess the results of the trial period, together with the costs involved in managing the system, before deciding on the model that could potentially come into force in 2027.<\/p>\n

For travellers planning a visit, therefore, the \u20ac30 figure should not yet be regarded as a final fee<\/strong>. The rates, applicable days and exemption procedures will have to be established through subsequent measures.<\/p>\n
