Inhabited as early as 1500 BC by the Ausones, Ponza later became part of the Roman domain and subsequently changed hands several times, often serving as a place of exile. Considered<strong> one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean<\/strong>, Chiaia di Luna is currently closed because of landslide and rockfall risks. The town grew up around the harbour, while Ponza also includes the districts of Santa Maria, just over a 15-minute walk from the port and reached through a <strong>Roman-era tunnel<\/strong>, and <strong>Le Forna<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/DTFY9qWD91JQP7RP6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, home to several coves and the famous &#8220;natural pools&#8221;, where <strong>the landscape becomes even wilder<\/strong> and more captivating. Among the island&#8217;s most interesting natural areas, all popular with tourists and visitors, are the <strong>beach of Frontone<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/19gU14dUcYokWtHk9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, the only beach that is easily accessible from the harbour thanks to a <strong>boat service operated by rental companies from Banchina Nuova<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/xqxHygutpSmNJqzX9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a>, as well as <strong>Lucia Rosa beach<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/UzCH3bzU2dXmvPC6A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, which can be reached by local buses departing from the <strong>Natural Pools<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/NMECJUuMXNh93nkM6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, where swimming is possible, as well as <strong>Cala Fonte<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/hwhyfy3Wf7FS7U2j6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Cala Feola<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/uHZkuQfToPPkKhkv9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Cala Felci<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/PUVE1W3M2zcVK7g79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14649\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14649 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/grotte-di-pilato-ponza-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grotte di Pilato-\u00a9G.Miele\/guidesmart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the natural sights visible by boat along Ponza&#8217;s coastline are the <strong>Grotte di Pilato<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/XMscJVbvXavHophj9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/_d_improd_\/Maps-icon-small_f_improf_20x20.png\" alt=\"Maps-icon-small\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, a <strong>complex of caves also created during Roman times, carved directly into the rock at sea level<\/strong>. During the Middle Ages, a never-confirmed but equally never-disproved belief spread that the island&#8217;s name originated from the presence of the <strong>Roman proconsul Pontius Pilate<\/strong>, although very little is actually known about him apart from his time as governor of Judea. But other legends add to the island&#8217;s fascination. One of the best-known stories is that of <strong>Circe<\/strong>, traditionally associated with the myth of Ulysses and the events described in the Odyssey. According to one interpretation of the legend, these islands may have been associated with the home of the enchantress who could turn men into animals.<\/p>\n<p>Another popular story is that of <strong>Lucia Rosa<\/strong>, a young woman at the centre of a tragic love story. According to local tradition, she threw herself from the cliff because her love was forbidden, and her story is linked to the <strong>Faraglioni di Lucia Rosa<\/strong>, one of the most evocative spots along Ponza&#8217;s coastline.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14830\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14830 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ponza1-1024x527.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"329\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9G.Miele\/guidesmart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ponza<\/strong> is the heart of the Pontine Islands. The largest island in the group, it is surrounded by three very different islands: <strong>Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi<\/strong>, which together form the western group of the archipelago. All four islands are volcanic in origin and offer <strong>spectacular landscapes and very different natural environments<\/strong>. Ponza is the busiest and offers a wide range of tourist services, while Palmarola and Zannone retain a much wilder character, and tiny Gavi is little more than a rocky outcrop rising from the sea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7611\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7611 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Palmarola-1024x589.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"368\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Palmarola-\u00a9G.Miele\/guidesmart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">About 7 nautical miles from Ponza, <strong>Palmarola<\/strong> is an almost uninhabited nature reserve, famous for its cliffs, caves, sea stacks and crystal-clear waters, <strong>so much so that Jacques-Yves Cousteau called it \u00abthe most beautiful island in the Mediterranean\u00bb<\/strong>. Its <strong>homes carved into the rock<\/strong> are particularly distinctive, while in summer a small restaurant operates on the beach. The best way to discover the island is to sail around it, perhaps stopping for a swim or some snorkelling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong><figure id=\"attachment_14753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14753\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/palmarola-1024x492.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"308\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14753\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Palmarola-\u00a9G.Miele\/guidesmart<\/figcaption><\/figure>Zannone<\/strong>, the northernmost island in the archipelago, is uninhabited and has been part of the <strong>Circeo National Park since 1979<\/strong>. Wild and covered in Mediterranean vegetation, it is also home to the <strong>ruins of an ancient Cistercian monastery<\/strong> and can be explored along authorised trails.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few hundred metres from Ponza lies tiny <strong>Gavi<\/strong>, an islet measuring about 700 metres by 350 metres, with no beaches or settlements. Its rugged, indented coastline is home to a single sea cave, the striking <strong>Grottone di Gavi<\/strong>, which can be seen on boat excursions.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12689\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ponza-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12689\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9G.Miele\/guidesmart<\/figcaption><\/figure>On <strong>June 20, Ponza comes alive with celebrations<\/strong>: after the solemn Mass, the statue of San Silverio is carried in procession through the streets and then out to sea aboard a boat, creating one of the most evocative moments of the festivities.
