In his <strong>Aeneid<\/strong>, <strong>Virgil<\/strong> tells how the hero Aeneas buried his <strong>nurse Caieta<\/strong> here, a story later echoed by <strong>Dante in the Divine Comedy<\/strong>, when <strong>Ulysses<\/strong> says that: &#8220;<strong>he passed before Aeneas gave her that name<\/strong>&#8220;. <span class=\"ltTestoStandardBlu\" style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><big>Gaeta has a very complex history, dating back to the 8th century BC. Popular tradition, however, recognises <strong>Saints Erasmus and Marcian<\/strong> as the city&#8217;s patron saints. It consists of music played on <strong>homemade instruments<\/strong>, <strong>accompanied by singing and choruses and performed on New Year&#8217;s Eve for the head of the family or head of the household<\/strong> \u2014 known in the local dialect as patr\u00f2, from the Latin patronus \u2014 outside the entrance to their home or business, as a way of wishing them good luck for the year ahead.
