Inside the fortress is the <strong>highest roof garden in Europe<\/strong><span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_custom_f849a1f9ca049798b6c340195160a7df classtoolTipsCustomShortCodeOnlyForMultiTooltips'><img src='https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/tooltip.gif' \/><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(\"document\").ready(function(){ toolTips('.tooltip_post_id_custom_f849a1f9ca049798b6c340195160a7df',\"<img src=\\'https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Cover-fumone-3-1-e1739616606695.jpg\\' \/>\",'0'); });<\/script>, with a vaguely trapezoidal layout, it has a surface area of around 3500 square metres and stands 803 metres above sea level, and is placed on two different levels: the upper structure, of about 2000 square metres, is characterised by the subdivision into regular compartments bordered with box hedges, placed on the sides of a central avenue flanked by <strong>cypress trees, ending with a 2nd-century AD Roman column in Luni marble.<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-10698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Giardino-pensile-fumone-proloco-fumone-1024x841.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"526\" \/><br \/>\nA second, lower level was built in the early 1700s and is characterised by the presence of centuries-old laurel trees. Inside is the &#8220;<strong>tree of love&#8221;<\/strong>, a gigantic cypressus funebris, the result of the unification of two trees. The castle is most famous for having been the prison, as well as<strong> the place of his death, of Celestine V  <span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_custom_c3b318eb4c9c284f91e579f904f8fc1d classtoolTipsCustomShortCodeOnlyForMultiTooltips'><img src='https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/tooltip.gif' \/><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(\"document\").ready(function(){ toolTips('.tooltip_post_id_custom_c3b318eb4c9c284f91e579f904f8fc1d',\"<img src=\\'https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Celestine_V-Di-Niccolo-di-Tommaso-Marie-Lan-Nguyen-wikimedia.jpeg\\' \/>\",'0'); });<\/script> during his imprisonment<\/strong>. On the day of his death, inside the fortress, the <strong>Pope \u2018of the Great Refusal\u2019<\/strong> is said to have performed a miracle, which is why he was proclaimed a saint just twelve years after his passing.<br \/>\n<strong>On top of the stronghold once stood a high tower<\/strong>, which served as a lookout post and communicated with the others in the neighbouring castles, so as to warn the whole territory in case of incursion. In fact, the smoke that was produced communicated throughout the countryside, and the surrounding areas, that enemies had entered the Via Casilina, and warned the population to find shelter. This gave rise to the popular saying: <strong>\u2018When Fumone smokes, the whole countryside trembles\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-8503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/fumone8-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/>-The Mysteries and Ghosts of the Castle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Castle of Fumone was for five centuries a prison of the Papal States, a history of imprisonment, violence and death, ignites the imagination,<strong> inside the fortress it is rumoured that there are at least eighteen ghosts<\/strong>. The first is that of Antipope Gregory VIII<span class='tooltipsall tooltip_post_id_custom_8edc71585b6066ba71db2b5a57e42106 classtoolTipsCustomShortCodeOnlyForMultiTooltips'><img src='https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/tooltip.gif' \/><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(\"document\").ready(function(){ toolTips('.tooltip_post_id_custom_8edc71585b6066ba71db2b5a57e42106',\"<img src=\\'https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Antipapa-Gregorio-VIII-Hartmann-Schedel-Public-domain-via-Wikimedia-Commons.jpg\\' \/>\",'0'); });<\/script>, who died in Fumone in 1124, and whose <strong>burial place still remains a mystery, because it has never been discovered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-8499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/fumone1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/>But without a shadow of a doubt,<strong> the most representative presence in the castle, the superstar, is that of the little Marquis Francesco Longhi<\/strong>. Legend has it that the child, of noble birth, was <strong>poisoned with arsenic (or bits of glass)<\/strong> by his seven sisters. It is said that the Marchesine, jealous, would have killed him for mere reasons of inheritance, since the little brother would have inherited everything, condemning them to novitiate in a convent, or to an arranged marriage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10715\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10715 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/marchesino-longhi-fumone-224x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marchesino Francesco Longhi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jealousy was also due to the fact that the marquise, mother of the child, showered her son with attention. After the mourning, the marquise fell into a state of severe sadness and categorically refused to bury her beloved son, having him embalmed to keep him close. She also had all traces of joy erased from the paintings.<\/p>\n<p>Some claim that <strong>every night the woman in distress goes to the room where her little son&#8217;s body is kept to cuddle and pamper him.<\/strong> Paranormal presences have been detected, by those who have made ghosts their scientific research, who with sophisticated techniques have tried to ascertain if there were any presences; even identifying an anthropomorphic form next to the shrine.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the fortress there would have been other crimes, here there is also the<strong> \u2018Well of the Virgins\u2019<\/strong>; where newly-married girls who did not arrive for the <strong>\u2018jus primae noctis\u2019<\/strong> were rushed, or thrown.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10653\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Lago-di-canterno-alessandro_pinto-iStock-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lago di Canterno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What to visit in the surroundings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fumone is located near <strong>Canterno Lake <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/rG9HqdyDVuHz3r3K6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignbottom wp-image-2140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maps-icon-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/strong>, a pleasant and suggestive location for an <strong>enjoyable and easy trekking in the midst of nature.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is a well-preserved nature reserve, which accompanies other interesting stops on the tour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fumone, but above all its surroundings, offers various types of accommodation to suit all tastes. In the historic centre you can find small hotels, holiday homes or B&amp;Bs, characteristically styled and very convenient for exploring the area. Outside the walls there are agritourisms located in the hills, connecting with the natural and bucolic dimension of the place.<br \/>\nThe costs are quite low, even in high season such as spring or autumn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to eat<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10709\" style=\"width: 1178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10709 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidesmart.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/fumone-pasta.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1178\" height=\"668\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maltagliati with bean and pecorino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fumone is located in the <strong>food and wine context of Lazio<\/strong>, so it offers a series of delicious typical dishes.<br \/>\nFirst courses are based on <strong>meat, mushrooms and truffles, but also pasta with legumes<\/strong>, such as pasta and beans with pecorino cheese.
